A 10 year olds perspective of school in Virgin Islands

"Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold."

School in the Virgin Islands has been great.

I really love my teacher - she is very helpful and laid back. She encourages you to always learn more because you are never finished learning. She lets you make mistakes without feeling bad and she tries to explain things in as many different ways as possible to help your brain learn in the way it needs to.

There are a few things I really like about my new school:

1. Weekly Field Trips

We take a field trip once a week - and the first week we we went to a pet store on the island to each pick out a fish for our fish tank. My fish is named "Riverside". This week (the second week), we went to Annaberg ruins where we had class outside and played hide and seek in the ruins.

2. We have our own plot in a garden

There is a garden next to our classroom and we each get a plot to plant what we want. I chose parsley, lemon basil and carrots. We also did a presentation about composting earlier in the week.

This is our garden outside our classroom

3. School made snack!

Everyday we get a snack that the fifth graders helped make. I learned that sometimes slushies don't taste good and veggies can taste great.

On my birthday I brought in cupcake cones for snack - my class loved them!

4. Friends

The people in my class are very supportive - even the boys sometimes. When you feel sad, stressed or shy, they try and help you get through it. I feel welcome here.

I am happy that things have gone so well with school and feel super lucky to have made new friends in this new place.

I loved this post, Mia! It's fun learning about what you're doing at school in St. John. Your class looks super fun. Happy belated birthday! xoxo, Liz
